Stairway to Heaven
Hideki Kimura, known as “Ki-yan,” was originally a man of rock and roll.
He was a senior to Kenji Sawada and used to produce rock festivals, but at the age of 60, he suddenly switched careers to become a painter. Ki-yan’s works, stemming from ideas that defy common sense, are truly eye-opening.
Adorning the staircase of AERO, which connects the first to the third floor, are golden carp that have broken free from their recumbent state and are now soaring up towards the heavens and across the earth.
The contrast of gold, vermilion, and indigo blue is distinctively Ki-yan and simply magnificent.
Koinobori(carp streamers)are a custom unique to Japan, traditionally displayed in front of homes to pray for the healthy growth of children.
This staircase is also known as the “Stairway of Soaring Carp”(Shōri no Kaidan), which phonetically also means “Stairway to Victory.”
Ki-yan himself refers to the carp as dragons.
We named the work’s English title “Stairway to Heaven.”
We are certain that some of our guests will hear Jimmy Page’s guitar riff from the Led Zeppelin song echoing in their minds as a background track.
